Bulky waste items containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs)
The Environment Agency has introduced new legislation for the collection and disposal of waste containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
This means if an item is ripped or damaged and contains or is made of any of these materials:
- Foam
- Leather
- Synthetic leather
- Other fabric.
The item must be taped, wrapped, or bagged up. For example, if there is a tear in a sofa and the foam inside is exposed, this tear will need to be taped over or if a cushion is ripped open, a bag or sack will need to be put over it.
If this is not done, we will not be able to collect this item. This is to help protect those collecting and disposing of these items.
Items this applies to includes:
- Cushioning and beanbags
- Office-style chairs with soft padding
- Sofas, armchairs, sofa beds and futons
- Stools, poufs, and ottomans
- Upholstered furniture.
No. The bed base and mattress will be classed as two separate items. A divan bed base in two pieces is however, classed as one item.
Yes. The cost for up to three items is still £35. It may be worthwhile to wait until you have three items or ask a neighbour if they want to share a booking (all the items will need to be collected from one address).
No, unfortunately we cannot collect normal domestic refuse, garden waste, rubble, ceramic tiles, gas cylinders, garage doors, sheds or large outbuildings, fence panels and very heavy items, such as pianos. If you are unsure please contact us.
We collect Monday to Friday excluding public holidays.
We can take bookings up to one week in advance.
Items will need to be placed out the front of your property by 7am. Access will need to be clear and the items accessible. If the items are not in the specified location or not out by the time the crew arrives you will lose the collection and will need to pay for another booking.
Unfortunately we are unable to collect any items from inside your property.
No. All items will need to be disconnected and empty prior to collection.
No. Fridges and freezers will need to be fully defrosted and empty of all food. Any items that are not empty will not be collected and you will need to make another booking at a further cost of £30.
We will need to be advised of any change to a booking before 2:30pm the day before the collection. The crews will only take the items specified on their collection list.
If you do need to amend your booking please note that we cannot guarantee the same collection date as selected.
You will need to advise us before 2:30pm on the day before the collection is due to receive a refund. Any changes made after this time may result in the booking being lost and no refund given.
Unfortunately not, the bulky waste collection service is a subsidised service for residents only. We are unable to collect from businesses or landlords as this is classed as trade waste. We suggest hiring a private contractor to responsibly dispose of your waste. You can find these services in the Yellow Pages or on the internet.
Unfortunately, there are no discounts available on this scheme. The cost is the same for all bookings.
Please contact us before 2:30pm the day before the collection to change or cancel any bookings. If we are not informed a refund cannot be issued.
We try to recycle as much as possible and this includes items such as cookers and fridges. Items that cannot be recycled will go to landfill or incineration.
If items are still in good repair, and in working order, we would encourage residents to try the charities and organisations listed who provide a free collection service for unwanted furniture and appliances for re-use.
