Bulky waste items containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs)
The Environment Agency has introduced new legislation for the collection and disposal of waste containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
This means if an item is ripped or damaged and contains or is made of any of these materials:
- Foam
- Leather
- Synthetic leather
- Other fabric.
The item must be taped, wrapped, or bagged up. For example, if there is a tear in a sofa and the foam inside is exposed, this tear will need to be taped over or if a cushion is ripped open, a bag or sack will need to be put over it.
If this is not done, we will not be able to collect this item. This is to help protect those collecting and disposing of these items.
Items this applies to includes:
- Cushioning and beanbags
- Office-style chairs with soft padding
- Sofas, armchairs, sofa beds and futons
- Stools, poufs, and ottomans
- Upholstered furniture.
