Press Releases week beginning 02 December 2019
Wet, but not that wet
Despite impressions to the contrary, November 2019 was only the 12th wettest November on record in Hastings, although it was the wettest for ten years. November 2019 saw 162.7mm of rain fall in the town, 79% up on the November average, and rain was recorded on 23 of the month's 30 days.
The wettest November on record - Hastings records date back to 1875 - was in 2009, when some 221.2mm of rain fell.
Sunshine this November was down, at 79% of the monthly average, but temperatures were in line with the long-term average, indeed the mean air temperature over 24 hours was 1.2°C higher than the long-term average.
Hastings Borough Council's marketing manager Kevin Boorman said: "Although November seemed very wet to me, it is interesting that 2009 was far worse, with over 59 mm - over 2" - more rain falling then compared to the month just gone. A total of 221.2mm (8.7") fell in 2009.
"We are very lucky that we are still able to produce such statistics, our volunteer weather team is out every single day of the year, passing the data on to the Met Office. We are very grateful to them for continuing a tradition that has gone on here for over 140 years."
Free parking for Christmas shoppers
Hastings Borough Council will once again be offering free parking in off street car parks every Thursday evening before Christmas.
Christmas shoppers will be able to park for free in the evening on the 5, 12 and 19 December. The charge is lifted from 4pm until the following morning, when charges will resume as usual. Parking will also be free all day on the 25 and 26 December, and on the 1 January.
Hastings Borough Council's parking services manager said:
"We hope that the free parking will encourage more people into Hastings to do their Christmas shopping, and see the great things our local businesses have to offer. We love to see our town busy and thriving over the Christmas period and this free parking should help us see this once again this year."
Pay and display machines won't be covered, but stickers on each machine will show the dates and times when charges do not apply.
Wunderkammer: Hastings Curiosities - a new exhibition at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery
Hastings Museum & Art Gallery's exciting new exhibition, Wunderkammer: Hastings Curiosities opens this Saturday.
Wunderkammer brings together nearly 300 outstanding objects from the depths of the museum's stores. The exhibition includes marvellous natural history specimens, ancient archaeological artefacts, local and social history objects and works of fine and decorative arts. It takes its name from the German for 'Cabinets of Curiosities'. These were an early type of museum developed during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries by wealthy merchants and nobles. These early museums combined displays of natural history, art and antiquities in an attempt to categorise and tell stories about the marvels of the natural world.
In Wunderkammer, the art gallery will be transformed into an evolving display and work area as objects are cleaned, documented and then returned to the stores. You will see in real time how the museum's curators and volunteers care for the collections and the work that is required to ensure the continued preservation of these marvellous collections for generations to come.
Damian Etherington, Museum and Cultural Development Manager, said: 'We are excited to open Wunderkammer: Hastings Curiosities this weekend. The exhibition will not only show beautiful objects from the stores but also life the veil on what work happens behind the scenes at the museum. We are grateful to our partners, The blackShed Gallery, Hastings Contemporary and De Le Warr Pavilion for their support in helping bring this exhibition together.'

Hastings Christmas trees have arrived
Christmas trees for display in Hastings were delivered and put up in five locations across the town on Friday 22 November in preparation for the festive season.
The trees have been placed in the town centre (outside Debenhams), Courthouse Street, Butlers Gap (George Street), Kings Road and Hastings Cemetery. All of the trees are 15-30ft high, with the tallest in the Town Centre.
A council spokesperson said:
"We're excited to have the Christmas trees up across the town again this year. We know people love seeing the trees and they really bring the festive spirit to Hastings.
"We also want to remind people to recycle their own Christmas trees after the festivities end. These provide environmentally friendly mulch for the winter gardens in our parks. You can recycle your Christmas Trees at Harmers lane from Tuesday 31 December 2019 to Monday 13 January 2020."
