  • Former Convent site

The Former Convent site in Magdalen Road, St Leonards, is privately owned and remains unsafe. The buildings are in a dangerous condition, and the site contains hazardous materials, including asbestos.

We are continuing to work with the site owner, emergency services and other partners to reduce risk, prevent unauthorised access and progress further safety measures.

Residents are reminded not to enter the site and not to encourage others to do so. Further updates will be provided as key steps are completed.

    Frequently asked questions:

    Who owns the site?

The Former Convent site is privately owned. Hastings Borough Council does not own the site.

    Why is the council involved?

The council is involved because the site presents a live public safety risk. There have been repeated incidents of unauthorised access, ongoing damage and serious concerns about the condition of the buildings.

    Why is the site dangerous?

The site is unsafe because the buildings are in a dangerous condition and should not be entered. The site also contains hazardous materials, including asbestos.

Can people go onto the site?

No. The site is unsafe and must not be entered. Unauthorised access puts people at serious risk of injury and may also place emergency responders at risk.

Is the council trying to take over the site?

No. The council is not seeking to take over the site. The council’s involvement is a public safety response to a dangerous situation and is focused on reducing risk and ensuring that the owner and other responsible parties take appropriate action.

    What is being done now?

The council is working with the owner, emergency services and other partners on safety measures, including independent health and safety assessment, stronger security arrangements and further work on access reduction.

    What happens next?

Further safety assessments and security measures are underway, and the council will continue to provide updates as key steps are completed.
