Sheila joins the We Are Undefeatable campaign
Published 28/10/2022
In September Active Hastings joined the We Are Undefeatable movement, by encouraging local people with long-term health conditions to keep active. Since then, Active Hastings has been working with the local community by asking people to share their stories on how exercise helps their long-term health condition, with the aim to inspire and motivate local people to get more active.
Sheila from Hastings, spoke to the Active Hastings team and shared her story: "Looking back, I'm sure I had postpartum depression after the birth of my first child. But that was in the 60s and people didn't talk about mental health then. I then started to have panic attacks, I can still remember my first panic attack well, I was in the queue at the Post Office, and I felt like I was going to pass out, that was over 60 years ago! It wasn't until my colleague asked me if I had tried yoga that I started to exercise to help my mental health. I went to yoga classes every week and I still do classes at home on the TV. I also try to go for a walk when I can, and I enjoy attending group exercise classes. What I've learnt is you've got to look after yourself, and for me I continue to look after my wellbeing through exercise."
Councillor Andy Batsford, lead councillor for Health and Culture at Hastings Borough Council, said: "Thank you to Sheila for sharing her story. Hearing how exercise has supported her wellbeing is fantastic and we hope Sheila's story inspires others to do the same."

Being Undefeatable is understanding how you feel can change from day-to-day, that everybody's situation is unique, and that moving more when you can is just as important as accepting when you can't. We Are Undefeatable believes that every achievement, no matter how small it might seem to someone else, is worth celebrating.
Active Hastings is hosted by Hastings Borough Council, in partnership with East Sussex County Council, and brings together a wide range of local and national partners to ensure that everyone in Hastings can get active.
