Cllr Andy Batsford, lead for Culture and Health at Hastings Borough Council, said:
"It is great to see so many community events being organised to celebrate this year's Refugee Week and we are excited to have the Sanctuary Festival back at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery for another year.
"These events really engage with the community and raise awareness of the difficulties faced by so many across the world. We are proud to have such a welcoming town, with so many dedicating their time to building strong connections with those seeking refuge to ensure that everyone is welcomed and included in our communities."
Polly Gifford, festival organiser and Co-Chair of Hastings Community of Sanctuary, added,
"The public narrative around refugees and people seeking asylum continues to be dominated by negativity and scapegoating, and so it is more important than ever to present a different story, that fosters understanding and compassion, which we are proud to do. People in Hastings have always shown amazing compassion for refugees and people seeking asylum and Sanctuary Festival exists because of that support. It's a great family day out that also sends a strong message of solidarity - we hope you will join us."
Rossana Leal, Founder and CEO of The Refugee Buddy Project, explained:
"As a refugee and migrant led organisation it's a pleasure to be leading on Refugee Week Hastings 2023, funded by the Arts Council and this year celebrating 25 years nationally. We have a wide array of activities and events to suit all ages and tastes, including over 25 artists and venues along the coast from Rye to Eastbourne. We can't wait to see the whole community come together to celebrate with us."
