Successful first weeks of pop-up padel
Published 06/07/2026

Hundreds of people have already booked the pop-up padel courts at White Rock Gardens since they opened in mid-June.
The temporary courts have come to Hastings for the summer to give residents of all ages the chance to try out one of the world’s fastest growing sports.
Alongside family groups and friends booking the courts, local primary and secondary schools are also booking sessions to introduce hundreds of pupils to padel, helping inspire a new generation to enjoy racket sports and lead active lifestyles.
Toby Reed, Area Manager for Freedom Leisure, said: “This project means a great deal to me personally. I learnt to play tennis on these very courts over 35 years ago, so to now be bringing padel to White Rock for the first time is something I’m incredibly proud of.
“It’s also fantastic to see the White Rock tennis courts being brought back to life and used again after all these years. They hold so many memories for local people, and it’s wonderful to see them once again full of activity and introducing a new generation to racket sports.
“Padel is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world because it’s fun, inclusive and easy to pick up. Thanks to the partnership between Freedom Leisure and Hastings Borough Council, local people can now experience the sport right here in Hastings.
“It’s been brilliant to see the response already. Primary and secondary schools have quickly booked sessions to introduce their pupils to the game, and we’re excited to welcome families, friends and players of all ages throughout the summer.”
Councillor Glenn Haffenden, Leader of Hastings Borough Council, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Freedom Leisure to bring pop-up padel to White Rock this summer. It’s a fantastic opportunity for residents and visitors to try a new sport in one of Hastings’ most historic sporting locations. We look forward to seeing people of all ages enjoying the courts over the coming months.
“We are keen to introduce permanent courts in Hastings and we have been actively looking for funding to allow us to do this. We are hoping to hear from the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) soon about whether we have been successful in our funding bid. The popularity of these pop-up courts shows that there is a desire and need to have a permanent padel offer in Hastings.”
Padel combines elements of tennis and squash and is played on an enclosed court, making it easy to learn, highly social and suitable for players of all ages and abilities.
