Work to start at Pelham Crescent
Published 17/07/2026

Work is due to start on restoring Pelham Crescent, which makes up the roof of the arcade at St Mary in the Castle.
Hailsham Roadway Construction Ltd (Roadways) have been appointed following a competitive procurement process and work will begin in mid-August.
The project will deliver essential repairs and improvements to protect the long-term future of Pelham Crescent. The approved works include replacing the waterproofing system above the historic sandstone vaults, improving drainage, reconstructing sections of the carriageway and footways, repairing historic features, and upgrading associated infrastructure.
These works will help preserve the historic character of Pelham Crescent while improving its condition, future sustainability and safety for residents and visitors.
Cllr Julia Hilton, deputy leader of the council and lead councillor for Shaping Places, Regeneration and Community Wealth, said: “The road at Pelham Crescent forms the roof of the arcade and crypts at St Mary in the Castle so securing this is the first step of wider works on the building below. We are committed to finding a sustainable future for this historic and unique building. The building survey has been completed, we are waiting for the report which we are expecting later this month. When we have received the report, we will be able to update more fully on plans and next steps.”
Residents living in Pelham Crescent have been contacted about the works. Our contractor will be minimising disruption while the works are being carried out.
James Bailey, director at Roadways, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be part of the team helping to secure the future of such an iconic Hastings landmark and the retail units below.
“As a local business, with around a third of our workforce living in Hastings and the surrounding area, it is a real privilege to be trusted with work that matters so much to the town.
"On a personal note, I was at the last Fat Tuesday Festival ball held at St Mary in the Castle, and I can't wait for the next one!"
