Magnificent May Day
Published 04/05/2022
Monday (2 May) saw a welcome return to the full Hastings May Day bank holiday experience, as the town was packed with the sound of bells and bikes. The Hastings traditional Jack in the Green Morris dancers were in town all weekend, joined by thousands of bikes for the May Day run.
Council spokesperson Kevin Boorman said: "What a brilliant weekend it was, in every respect. The weather was perfect, dry and pleasantly warm, and the town was certainly ready to celebrate. Many thousands of visitors packed the streets on Monday to see both the Jack parade around the Old Town and then be slain on the West Hill in the afternoon, and to see the bikes that filled the seafront and elsewhere.
"It was so good to see the town alive and buzzing with people again after two years of quiet May Day bank holidays because of the pandemic. We're particularly grateful to the volunteer Jack in the Green committee who worked so hard to organise their event and make it such a success.
"We know Hastings is unique, and crazy days like Monday prove it!"
