Continuing our work towards net zero
Published 28/10/2022
Hastings Council declared a Climate Emergency in 2019.
Councillors will discuss an update to Hastings Borough Council's Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan at the Cabinet meeting on 7 November.
The update details the progress that has been made towards the council's target of reaching net zero by 2030 while also noting that the government's target is 2050 which makes our target more difficult.
Four new themes have been introduced in response to the work over the last three years. These are food, waste and the circular economy, water, and adaptation and resilience. These new themes will sit alongside the six originally identified.
The council has also been asking residents and businesses to get involved and give their thoughts and opinions, using the CitizenLab engagement platform. Some of the suggestions received are: creating more wildlife habitats, planting trees, creating more wildflower areas to support pollinators, supporting local food growing, using recycled rainwater in public toilets, supporting home insulation at scale, promoting car free days and installing more faster electric vehicle infrastructure.
Cllr Paul Barnett, leader of the council, said: "We have a critical role in this emergency, to transform the council's response by 2030, and to support the whole town moving to Net Zero. This report outlines progress towards these targets including a big drop in the use of fossil fuels.
"Our climate change strategy is an evolving document, and so we will be adding to it as we complete projects and work in the coming months. The way we deliver our services, develop policy and how we attract funding into the town will all be vital as we work to achieve the aims and complete the projects in this plan.
"However, with continued financial challenges and uncertain economic times, this all becomes more challenging for us and everyone else, so we will be seeking new ways of bringing the whole town together to work on this, as well as working across all our services areas to ensure climate resilience and reducing emissions are planned for within existing resources."
The climate change pages on the council website and the action plan will be updated as projects are completed. Visit https://www.hastings.gov.uk/my-council/climate-change/ for more information.
