Extra care housing is a specialist type of retirement housing designed for older people. Extra care housing combines accommodation with care and support services, with someone on-site 24 hours a day.
It is similar to sheltered housing but also offers help with personal care and household chores, so it may be suitable if you have higher or changing care needs
The facilities and care provided will vary, but extra care housing schemes usually include:
- self-contained flats which are specially designed for wheelchair users or people who find walking more difficult.
- on-site care and support staff, providing personal care and domestic services
- emergency alarms throughout the scheme, with 24-hour help available
- communal facilities and services such as a lounge, dining area and garden.
- you have health problems
- you are struggling to look after your home or garden
- you are considering residential care
- you need regular support to enable you to live in your own home
- you think you will need more support in the future
The eligibility criteria will depend on the scheme, but residents are usually:
- aged 55 years and older
- able to live safely on their own with some support.
- have 11 hours or more of care needs per week (ie, support with washing dressing, managing medication & domestic tasks)
- local connection to East Sussex
If you are part of a couple and one of you has greater care needs, extra care housing could make it possible for you to continue to live together.

Care and Support
The on-site care and support is commissioned from East Sussex County Council. A financial assessment by Adult Social Care will tell you how much you might need to pay towards the cost of the care.
To apply, you must have a Care Act needs assessment.
You can start our assessment online or contact Adult Social Care
