Hawk-moths
Hawk-moths rival butterflies in size, colour and pattern and are amongst the most spectacular large flying insects found in the British Isles. Hastings is an excellent place to see these insects not only due to the diverse number of resident species breeding in gardens and wildlife sites in the town but also due to the migrants that are commonly recorded. These include the largest European species, Convolvulus Hawk-moth (Agrius convolvuli), and rarities such as Death's-head Hawk-moth (Acherontia atropos) and Spurge Hawk-moth (Hyles euphorbiae).
One of the best ways to see these insects is by going along to public moth evenings events around the town or by joining the Hastings branch of the Sussex Moth Group which organises almost monthly events from April to October.
