Flooding and flood prevention
Arrangements for local responder organisations to work together in the event of a flooding incident in Hastings, particularly one caused by flooding from rivers or the sea, are set out in the Hastings Flood Plan.
Regular exercises are carried out with the emergency services and a range of other organisations to test the plan and further improve our response arrangements.
Flooding from surface water caused by heavy rainfall is becoming more widespread and precautions to protect your property can be put in place to deal with this type of occasional event.
The Environment Agency has produced advice on how to prepare for a flood and how to get help.
Hastings Borough Council does not usually provide sandbags or similar protection for individual households, however some products will be available to purchase at your local builders merchant or DIY store.
If you think your property is in a flood risk area you may wish to register for with the Environment Agency's Flood Warning Service.
East Sussex County Council has published an interim report into the flooding in Hastings town centre in January 2023.
