    East Hill Lift

The East Hill Lift will be closed on 14 and 15 February for essential works. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

    East Hill Lift

East Hill, Rock-a-Nore Road, Hastings, East Sussex, TN34 3EG

The East Hill Lift is the UK’s steepest funicular railway and an unmissable experience when visiting Hastings. This historic lift first opened in August 1902 and still provides residents and visitors with easy access to Hastings Country Park. Once at the top, you will also be met with sweeping views of the coast and Europe's largest beach-launched fishing fleet.

The East Hill Lift has step-free access and has space for a wheelchair or pushchairs. Unfortunately, it is not suitable for larger mobility scooters. Well behaved dogs are welcome to join you for the ride too.

    1 October 2025 to 29 February 2026 - Open Saturday and Sunday only, 11am to 4pm.

    West Hill Lift

West Hill, George Street, Hastings, East Sussex, TN34 3EA

Step back in time with a ride on the West Hill Lift, which first opened in 1891. This funicular railway still features its original wooden Victorian carriages.

Start your journey from the lower station on George Street, an area filled with unique cafés, pubs, and independent shops - perfect for exploring before or after your ride.

At the top, take in some of the most beautiful views across Hastings and out to the English Channel. The West Hill is also home to historic landmarks including Hastings Castle.

Due to the original design, the lift is not wheelchair accessible and has limited space for pushchairs. You can also reach the West Hill by road or try the East Hill Lift, which has step-free access and is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Well behaved dogs are welcome to join you.
