The Safer Streets project partnership consists of several local organisations, including Sussex Police, Heart of Hastings, Hastings Borough Council, the Business Crime Reduction Partnership, Neighbourhood Watch and Tidy Up St Leonards (TUSL). The aim of this partnership is to reduce crime and improve safety in St Leonards.

Tidy Up St Leonards one of the Safer Streets project partners is continuing to dedicate their time to improving the area for local businesses, residents and visitors.

The Tidy Up St Leonards volunteers work alongside local councils, housing associations, and other agencies to help improve the overall street and woodland scene of the town. Five of their trustees recently dedicated time to clearing overgrowth and weeds from the pavement along Pevensey Road, generating 16 sacks of green waste. At the same time 22 other volunteers were out working to ensure the streets remained litter free.

As well as helping local organisations keep paths and gutters clear, pavements weeded, overgrowth cut back, and litter cleared, the TUSL team carry out regular inspections of the local area. This includes assisting with woodland conservation activities in some of the town's green spaces and reporting newly damaged signage, lighting and fencing to the responsible organisation.

John Funnell, Tidy Up St Leonards (TUSL), said,

"Tidy Up St Leonards is a well-established local team of dedicated volunteers who work alongside various agencies in St Leonards, all with a joint mission to improve the area for residents, visitors, and businesses. We hold regular 'Tidy Up' sessions across St Leonards, where our fantastic team of enthusiastic volunteers give up their free time to focus on areas that need some extra attention.

"We are pleased to join the Safer Streets project and look forward to working with residents, businesses and the other organisations within the Safer Streets area to make a difference.

"We hope the Safer Streets project will help us to build connections with more local residents who would like to offer their valued time and practical help to improve the streets and green spaces of St Leonards."

Cllr Paul Barnett, Hastings Borough Council's lead councillor for Urban Environment and Community Safety, explained,

"We are grateful for Tidy Up St Leonards' continued voluntary support, dedicating time to work alongside our council and other organisations to improve the areas safety.

"The Safer Streets project offers an excellent opportunity for the partners involved, as well as businesses and residents, to work collaboratively to identify areas that need enhancement in St Leonards."

John Bownas, Chair of Hastings Neighbourhood Watch, added,

"From the perspective of Neighbourhood Watch this is exactly the sort of project we always love to support. If there are any other groups across the borough who would like to do something similar Neighbourhood Watch can help by providing materials and insurance, as well as by trying to link people together."
