Housing acquisition programme successes
Published 05/02/2026

Hastings Borough Council’s housing acquisitions programme has led to fewer children living in temporary accommodation and has helped people out of rough sleeping in 2025.
The number of children living in private temporary accommodation was 62 fewer at the end of 2025 than it was at the end of 2024. There are also no children living in bed and breakfast accommodation or accommodation with shared facilities.
In 2025 we were also able to help 96 people indoors and out of rough sleeping.
The housing acquisition programme has allowed us to buy nearly 150 homes that can now house residents in housing need.
Cllr Glenn Haffenden, leader of the council and lead councillor for housing, said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to reduce the number of children living in private temporary accommodation. We know how important it is for children to have a safe and secure home to give them the best start in life. Being able to live close to schools and support networks is really important. We will continue our programme to buy more homes so we can keep reducing the numbers of people in private temporary accommodation.
“I’m also really pleased that we have been able to make such a difference to people who have been rough sleeping through the acquisition programme – we are committed to continuing to buy homes that we can use to house local residents in housing need.”
