This weekend sees the start of Great Big Green Week where communities are encouraged to celebrate the actions they are taking on climate change.
The recent Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change report signalled a Code Red for humanity. Climate change is the biggest threat facing humanity. It needs urgent action.
With the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference known as COP (Conference of the Parties) 26 happening in November, everyone needs to act now.
Governments and countries must work together to enact legislation that is needed and provide the funding to tackle climate change. Post pandemic we need both a green recovery and to keep the temperature of our planet under control.
Hastings Borough Council has declared a Climate Emergency and a target of carbon neutrality for the borough by 2030. The strategy has been shared with the Local Strategic Partnership and the council believes we must all work together to reduce carbon emissions in our town.
Councillors will discuss their latest climate change report and the progress and actions that have been taken at next month's Cabinet meeting.
The council continues to lobby government for additional resources to help deliver the ambition of the strategy and associated plan and to ensure our town is a thriving environmentally friendly place to be.
Cllr Kim Forward, leader of Hastings Borough Council, added: "As one of the first councils in the country to declare a climate emergency we know change must happen now. The target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030 is ambitious and one the council cannot achieve alone.
"We have achieved a significant amount since the Climate Emergency Strategy and Action Plan was published in 2020 and it is essential we continue to work together to reduce our emissions.
"Thank you to the many groups and people working hard to save our planet which is our home. The climate change section of our website contains lots of small changes we can make which collectively can make a real difference."
