The Census is an important survey that happens every 10 years in England and Wales. The information provided will help local councils and charities to plan for the services that Hastings needs, including transport, education, and healthcare.

On Census Day (Sunday 21 March 2021) households will be invited to complete the survey digitally on the census website: https://census.gov.uk using a unique access code that will be sent in the post shortly. A paper copy can also be requested.

The paper version can be ordered using the census website or by calling 0800 141 2021 (English) or 0800 587 2021 (other languages) to speak to a census advisor. They will also be able to assist with completing the questionnaire, requesting additional questionnaires and large print or braille forms.

Local support is also available to help residents who are struggling to complete their census questionnaire, due to little or no computer skills, or language difficulties. This support can be requested by either calling Hastings Voluntary Action on 01424 444 010 or the Seaview Project on 01424 717981. Hastings Borough Council are also available to assist with answering questions and ordering paper copies on 01424 451066.

Harry Farmer, Census Engagement Manager - Rother, Hastings, Eastbourne & Wealden, said,

"As the town's Census Engagement Manager, I am continuing to help local organisations, including charities, faith groups and community leaders to raise awareness of the census and the value completing it offers residents. With the valuable assistance of Hastings Borough Council, their Councillors and other key organisations like Hastings Voluntary Action and the Seaview Project. I am confident we can make everyone in the local community aware of the importance of Census 2021.

"I am looking forward to engaging with as many of the communities of Hastings as possible, offering my help and support to ensure a successful engagement and participation in Census 2021. Due to continued COVID-19 restrictions sadly this must be conducted via online meetings rather than in person while out walking around Hastings. If you need help within your community please feel free to contact me by email john.farmer36@field.census.gov.uk or telephone 07452 942 713"
Steve Manwaring, Director of Hastings Voluntary Action, said

"We are keen to help the census count to be as accurate as possible in Hastings, so we get our fair share of resources in the town for people who need extra support."

Dave Perry, Chief Officer at The Seaview Project, added,

"The Seaview Project are supporting census completion work for members of the local community. Due to lockdown restrictions, we will be doing this initially by phone and, as the restrictions are more relaxed in the future, we hope to be able to invite people into our centre and work on the form face to face.

If you would like some support with completing the form, please call us on 01424 717981"

Cllr Judy Rogers, Hastings Borough Council's lead councillor for Equalities, Organisational Well-Being & Performance, added,

"It is important that every householder returns a completed census questionnaire, to help provide vital information that will support our local area in receiving the funding it needs most. If you need help ordering a paper version or have any questions, Hastings Borough Council is available to offer support just call 01424 451066 to speak to one of our team."
