Temporary Accommodation Expenditure and Void Properties

      Requested Wed 03 December 2025
      Responded Wed 11 February 2026

I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request the following information regarding temporary accommodation and social housing provision within your authority.

      1. Expenditure:

Please confirm the total amount spent by the council on temporary accommodation placements within the private rented sector during the most recent full financial year.

      1. Void Properties (Temporary Accommodation):

Please confirm the current number of void (unoccupied) properties that the council has within its temporary accommodation portfolio.

      1. Subsidy Loss:
Please provide the total subsidy loss related to temporary accommodation for the most recent full financial year.
      2. Families Awaiting Placement:
Please state the current number of families awaiting suitable temporary accommodation.
      3. Empty/Decanted Properties for Regeneration:
Please provide the number of council-owned properties currently empty or decanted and awaiting regeneration or redevelopment.

      Response

Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding.

      1. For the financial year 2024/25, the gross cost of temporary accommodation placements within the private rented sector (excluding Housing Benefit and personal contributions) was £10,443,896.

      2. Void Properties (Temporary Accommodation) - Via external TA providers - 32 vacant units of varying size

      3. The subsidy loss for 2024/2025 is £5,884,775.40

      4. Families Awaiting Placement - Currently no families awaiting TA placements

      5. Empty/Decanted Properties for Regeneration - Hastings Borough Council did a large scale voluntary transfer of its housing stock in 1996 and subsequently only has a relatively small housing portfolio used for various types of temporary accommodation. Properties are only empty short-term while works are being done to bring them back to the council's fit to let standard or while tenants are being allocated
