      Social Housing Waiting Times

      Requested Tue 25 August 2026
      Responded Tue 01 September 2026

I am asking for this information to figure out why so many houses/flats are being built across Hastings and St Leonards.
Clients are asking why they're in TA for so long with all of these new builds that are completed and ready to move into.
what is the current waiting list looking like for social housing? and why is it taking so long to reduce housing pressure

      Response

Hastings Borough Council have benefitted from a number of new-build residential developments in recent years which have delivered a mix of market housing, affordable rent, social rent and shared ownership homes to help meet a range of local housing needs.

There are currently 1,522 households on the Housing Register (see attached spreadsheet).

Excluding 67 households eligible for older persons' housing, all applicants have an evidenced housing need, such as overcrowding, homelessness or a medical requirement to move.

In addition, 628 households are currently living in temporary accommodation. However, only 228 social housing lettings were made during the last 12 months (see attached spreadsheet), which included new-build affordable and social rented homes completed.

These figures demonstrate that despite the delivery of new affordable homes, demand continues to significantly exceed the supply of available housing.

The Council continues to work through the planning process and with Registered Provider partners to maximise the delivery of affordable housing across the borough.
