Responded Wed 27 May 2026In the Hastings Housing Strategy document under 'Data Snapshot 2025' there is a figure of 40,454 given for the number of households. Can you please state the origin of this figure as it appears very high relative to the total population?
Response
The figure of 40,454 households used in the Hastings Housing Strategy was derived from analysis of Census 2021 data on households by accommodation type and was used as a high-level snapshot figure for strategic presentation purposes.
The official Census 2021 household count for the borough of Hastings is 41,146 households with at least one usual resident, which represents the household total.
While the household number may appear high relative to the total population, this reflects Hastings' low average household size and high proportion of single person households, which is a well-documented local demographic characteristic.
The Council will update published material on the strategy to reflect the Census 2021 figure of 41,146 households.
