I understand the Surveillance Commissioner in The Investigatory Powers Tribunal has given legal consent for the council's legal department to have its own effective RIPA-based surveillance system drawn up by its chief legal officer?

Response

As an organisation that can carry out surveillance under RIPA legislation, Hastings Borough Council is required to have RIPA policies and procedures in place and ensure that staff are trained in the use of RIPA.

Our policies and procedures are regularly inspected by the Investigatory Powers Commissioner's Office (IPCO), formerly the Office of the Surveillance Commissioners, to ensure that they continue to comply with, and reflect any updates to, the RIPA legislation.
