Response
1. How many individual requests has the Council received from the Home Office to provide housing or accommodation for asylum seekers, refugees, legal migrants and illegal migrants? (From Saturday 1st January 2022 - Friday 14th October 2022)
Answer: Hastings Borough Council (HBC) has not received any requests from the Home Office to provide housing for any person in the categories named above.
2. How many asylum seekers, refugees, legal migrants and illegal migrants has the Council successfully provided housing or accommodation for during this period? (From Saturday 1st January 2022 - Friday 14th October 2022)
Answer: It is not the responsibility of the Council to provide accommodation for asylum seekers. No statistics are kept on 'legal migrants' as this would include those granted refugee status, those on the EU settlement scheme, as well as persons on spouse or employment visas. 'Illegal migrants' have no recourse to public funds so are not eligible for support from the Council.
However, we do hold information on households who have presented to the council and who are eligible for housing homelessness assistance under Part 6 and Part 7 of the Housing Act 1996, of which:
• EEA citizen residing in the UK prior to 31 December 2020: settled status, other, worker = 13 households were placed in temporary accommodation
• Non-UK: Indefinite Leave to Remain, Exceptional Leave to Remain, Granted refugee status, Limited leave to remain = 25 households were placed in temporary accommodation
