FOI request (FOIR-115153482)
Hastings Pier
Requested Tue 23 April 2019
Responded Mon 29 April 2019Under the Freedom of Information Act please can you explain the procedure of the sale of Hastings Pier. The people of Hastings and others, could then understand how things happened and then put this matter to rest.
Response
Hastings Borough Council had no involvement in the selling of Hastings Pier.
The council compulsorily purchased it following the fire in October 2010 and immediately passed ownership to Hastings Pier Charity in a 'back to back' deal.
Hastings Pier Charity secured Heritage Lottery Funding to rebuild and reopen the pier, and it reopened to the public in April 2016, run by Hastings Pier Charity.
Hastings Pier Charity went into administration in November 2017, but continued to operate, in administration.
The pier was offered for sale in 2018, and, after a competitive tendering process, was bought by Mr Gulzar, the owner of Eastbourne Pier, in June 2018.
The pier was closed in December 2018, and reopened in April 2019
