FOI request (FOIR-90134247)
Money spent on flood defences across Hastings
Requested Mon 01 October 2018
Responded Thu 11 October 2018I would like to know how much has been spent on flood defences over the last 5 years. In addition, I would also like to find out how much the council has spent repairing flood damages.
Response
Hastings Borough Council (HBC) is only one party responsibility for flooding within the local area, and therefore only able to provide a part response to the questions.East Sussex County Council is the LLFA and responsible for surface water, ground water and ordinary watercourses. The Environment Agency is responsible for main rivers and tidal flooding.HBC is responsible for coastal protection.Southern Water is responsible for sewer flooding.East Sussex Highways is responsible for highway drainage and runoff.Under HBC coastal protection responsibilities we have a dedicated coastal protection budget, this figure currently stands at £2,230 for 18/19. This figure was previously £14,850 per annum prior to and up to 17/18.Through the Environment Agency PAFS service, HBC has recently accessed external DEFRA funding for coastal protection works to our harbour arm. These works are currently on-going so the final cost is not confirmed, however the project is forecast to cost up to £3,300,000 upon completion. HBC contributes a £30,000 figure towards the total amount. HBC has not spent any funds repairing flood damages within the last 5 years.
