FOI request (FOIR-743831085)
Use of hotels for temporary accommodation
Requested Tue 26 August 2025
Responded Thu 11 September 2025I would like to ask for information about the use of hotel accommodation by the local authority for individuals you have a statutory or other duty to accommodate.
Please do not include the use of hotels for department business or staff in any capacity, for example work travel, conferences, and so on.
Please provide, broken down by month between January 2019 (or as far back as you can go up to that point) and the latest available month:
- The number of individuals.
- The number of hotel sites used (for example, individual hotels that are part of a chain, independent hotels, bed and breakfasts, and so on).
- Total amount spent.
- Please also provide a broad description of the different groups of people accommodated in hotels and the reasons for using hotels.
Response
The answer we are providing is based on analysing our invoicing system. We are not able from this information source to answer 'the number of individuals' or 'a broad description of the different groups of people accommodated in hotels and the reasons for using hotels'.
In answer to 'the number of hotel sites used', 8 separate hotels have been used from 2019 to date.
In answer to 'total amount spent', in the time available we are not able to split the costs by month. The reason for this is that the information is recorded based on when invoices are processed and not based on the dates of occupation.
For this reason, we are giving the costs per financial year, as follows:
2019/20 - £14,628
2020/21 - £22,218
2021/22 - £16,639
2022/23 - 141,019
2023/24 - £99,473
2024/25 - £33,704
