      Public Bin Provision

      Requested Wed 23 April 2025
      Responded Thu 01 May 2025

I would like to request the following information as a Freedom Of Information request. If possible please provide the data as an Excel.

By public litter bin I mean a bin provided by the council for the public to put their rubbish on the street, in a park, and so on.

      1. How many public litter bins has your council provided for each of the years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024?

      2. How often have each of your public bins been emptied for each of the years, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024?

      3. How many complaints have you received related to public litter bins for each of the years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024? And if possible, broken down by topic of complaint (for example, not enough bins, overflowing bins).

      4. What was the cost to your council to provide, maintain, and empty public bins for each of the years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024?

      Response

      1. No change over the last 4 years. Hastings Borough Council (HBC) has kept the same amount each of these years, as when one is removed for whatever reason, we add to a new location. There are 1068 bins in total.

      2. HBC is unable to give exact numbers due to rounds being altered from time to time to cover leave, sickness, or vehicles off the road. The number of empties per day/week will also alter throughout the seasons and My Hastings reports. However, our schedules state each bin will be emptied once daily in Zone 1 areas, and twice per week all other bins on a rolling rota. During peak season, Rock A Nore to Glyne gap, Old Town and Town Centre bins will be emptied twice per day or more if required. In addition to this, other general empties will take place following My Hastings reports.

My Hastings is the council's reporting tool.

      3. Please see the attached spreadsheet. Unfortunately we only hold data back to 2023 as this reporting function has only been available since this time.

      4. This is covered within the in-house street cleaning contract, and so HBC is unable to provide a specific cost.
