Second homes council tax premium

From 1st April 2025, your authority is able to charge council tax at up to 2 times the normal rate on second homes.

Please can you tell me, for the financial year 2025/26:

1. What rate of council tax you will charge on second homes,

2. Your forecast of additional income from any premium above the normal rate, and

3. Whether you have adopted a policy to make any of this additional income available for new community led housing in your area.

Response

1. The Council will introduce a 100% premium charge on second homes from 1st April 2025, meaning a total charge of 200% of the normal rate will be levied on such properties from then onwards.

2. Using the figures available when the decision to levy an additional premium on such properties was made, the Council expected to raise approximately an additional £935,000 in collectable Council Tax.
