FOI request (FOIR-363310730)
Zero hours contracts
Requested Wed 15 September 2021
Responded Tue 26 October 2021Please advise the current number of staff you have employed on "zero hours contract".
Please define according to the official definition: "They are on call to work when you need them. You do not have to give them work. They do not have to do work when asked."
Response
Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding.
Hastings Borough Council currently have 16 active casuals on our payroll. We differentiate between casuals and zero hours. A zero hours contract will typically (but not necessarily) differ from a standard casual worker agreement in that, while the employer is under no obligation to offer work, the individual is usually obliged to be available and to accept the work when it is offered. Our casuals are under no obligation to accept work offered, however based on the definition above the 16 casuals would fall under that definition.
