    UC claimants' rent arrears

    Requested Wed 12 February 2020
    Responded  Mon 20 April 2020

I'd like to request the following under FOI.

For each of the following points in time:

    • Now

    • End of the reporting year 2018/19

    • End of the reporting year 2017/18

    • End of the reporting year 2016/17

    • End of the reporting year 2015/16

    Please could you tell me:

    1. How many council tenants (including those in council-run emergency/temporary accommodation if applicable) were in arrears on their rent?

    2. What was the total sum owed in arrears?

    3. How many of those tenants were Universal Credit claimants?

    4. What was the total THEY owed?

Please could you also tell me:

    1. How does the council plan to cover the current shortfall in rent owed in arrears?

    2. When was Universal Credit rolled out in your authority's area?

    Response

    1. Information not held for those tenants who were placed in emergency accommodation.

The tenants that our Social Lettings Agency manage are:

    2015/16 = 5

    2016/17 = 10

    2017/18 = 7

    2018/19 = 3

    2019/20 = 3

    2.

    2015/16 = 0

    2016/17 = £5288.76

    2017/18 = £15285.71

    2018/19 = £7250.02

    2019/20 = £1,509.40

    3.

    2015/16 = 0

    2016/17 = 0

    2017/18 = 4

    2018/19 = 1

    2019/20 = 0

    4. See Q2 above

    1. Social Lettings sends out arrears letters and agrees with the tenant a payment plan.

    2. Universal Credit was rolled out in our area on 16th December 2016. Government changed regulations in April 2018 so those placed in temporary accommodation now claim housing benefit instead of Universal Credit.
