FOI request (FOI-97238254)
Where do I find the 1947 Deed of Compromise?
Requested Mon 26 November 2018
Responded Wed 12 December 2018I am a student of architecture at the Architectural Association in London, involved in research about fishing settlements on the coast of East Sussex. In my study of the Stade beach in Hastings, I've come across references to what seems to be a statutory agreement between the Fishermen's Society and the Council over the ownership and use of land here since the 1947. However, I am yet to find actual documentation, any evidence for that matter, of this "Deed of Compromise". For example, The Hastings Borough Council Act 1988 gave permission to vary the 1893 trusts for various activities. Section 3 of this act specifies the use of foreshore and adjacent lands. Section 4, however, states that, quote: nothing in section 3 shall affect the operation of the deed of compromise dated 9th May 1947.For the purpose of research, I'd like to learn about the conditions of the Deed of Compromise as adhered to in the development of the Hastings foreshore. If it exists in your records, could you please provide me with a copy the signed agreement, any documentation of it, or otherwise describe the content of such?
