      List of Questions to ask other Coast protection providers

       

      Areas of investigations:

       

      1. Staffing - training, numbers, roles
      2. Machinery and materials - tools, tractors, timber etc.
      3. Health and Safety - vibration exposure, welfare, use of machinery etc, risk assessments.

       

      Staffing

       

      • How many employees make up the team?

       

      1. How is the team structured?

       

      1. What training do they receive? CSCS card? / use of plant / chainsaw?

       

      1. Do the team rotate their jobs?

       

      Machinery and Materials

       

      • What machinery and plant is used for the work?


      1. What hand tools do employees use? How are they powered? (exact spec if possible)

       

      1. How is the old wood from the groynes removed / disposed of?


      Health and safety

       

      1. What risk assessments do you have in place covering the coast protection work? (copies if you can?)

       

      1. What method statements do you have in place? (copies if you can?)


      1. How do you monitor and comply with HAV exposure of employees?


      1. What welfare facilities are provided for employees?

      Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding, we have installed a new Freedom of Information system and have experienced a few problems.

      Staffing

      Q1 - 5

      Q2 - Major Projects Manager oversees Resort Services Manager who oversees 3 person Foreshore Maintenance team.

      Q3 - Routine in-house training, abrasive wheel training, pillar drill training, IOSH training, legionella awareness, asbestos awareness, risk assessment, project management etc. CSCS card not used. No use of plant. No use of chainsaw.

      Q4 - Yes.

      Machinery and Materials

      Q1 - Only battery powered tools and hand tools. Any jobs requiring use of plant or machinery would be contracted out to specialist.

      Q2 - Only battery powered tools including drill, electric screwdriver, jigsaw & reciprocating saw. Non powered hand tools include hammers, screwdrivers, saws.

      Q3 - This is only done during major refurbishment works carried out by specialist contractors. Any timbers damaged are recovered and stored for recycling in later projects.

      H&S

      Q1 - Risk assessments in place for routine works. Dynamic risk assessments carried out for non routine works. Major works contractors provide their own risk assessments.

      Q2 - Method statements in place for all routine works. Major works contractors provide their own method statements.

      Q3 - Employees do not use vibrating tools frequently or for prolonged periods of time. In house Corporate Health and Safety Advisor audits and reviews training, monitoring and compliance.

      Q4 - Employees based at seafront workshop with toilets, kitchen, mess room, locker room, office. Contractors provide welfare facilities for their own staff.
