Staying safe in a heatwave

When it gets really hot there are some simple tips you can follow to stay cooler and safe.

• Keep your windows closed to stop the hot air getting in
• Keep your curtains and blinds closed
• Avoid going outside. If you must go out, wear a hat and loose clothing
• Take a cool shower or put a damp cloth on the back of your neck
• Remember to keep drinking – not alcohol.

Planning for hot weather is important, as symptoms of heatstroke and heat exhaustion can appear rapidly.

If you are out and about in the summer you also need to be aware of the risk of ticks. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the NHS have useful information on their websites about protecting yourself against ticks and Lyme disease.
