Hastings Museum & Art Gallery marks the centenary of the end of the First World War with two new exhibitions

The First World War shaped the world we know today. Nothing like it had ever been seen before. Fighting took place in Europe, Africa and Asia, and over 40% of the world's population felt its impact. More than 9 million of those who fought were killed and more than 7 million civilians died from fighting, disease or starvation. This death toll changed society's attitude to war as few were left unaffected.
Since 2014, Hastings Remembers has been looking at the impact the war had on Hastings and its communities. They have uncovered some fascinating stories and objects, which can be explored on the exhibition touchscreen.
Deputy leader Kim Forward, lead councillor for regeneration and culture said,
"The ground floor exhibition examines remembrance and memorial through objects from the museum's collection. It shows how the sacrifices of the conflict have been marked, both for individuals and for society as a whole.
A brand new touchscreen interactive will give visitors to opportunity to explore more local stories and browse the museum's First World War collections. Admission to the exhibition at the museum and art gallery is free."
The second exhibition examines The Price of War. In autumn 1914, it became clear that the fighting wouldn't be over by Christmas. If Britain was going to be in for the long haul, the government had to find ways of meeting the huge expense of war. It had three main options: taxes, borrowing and printing money. All would have a direct impact on the general public. This exhibition shows a selection of public information posters and leaflets designed to encourage people to support the economic war effort, both through direct financial investment as well as rationing and thrifty household management.
Tuesday 23 October / 10am - 3pm / free: Family activity day. Join us for our usual popular mix of First World War-themed activities, including arts/crafts, object handling and a special visit from Hands On History
Saturday 10 November/ 2 - 3.30pm/ free: open afternoon for Hastings Remembers: Local Stories of the First World War. Centenary refreshments available, and popular music of the day, as well as some simple craft activities for families.
Saturday 26 January / 10.30am - 3.15pm / £50: Adult art workshop: Memory Mats with Debbie Siniska. Come & learn the old fashioned techniques of hooky and proddy using traditional hand tools and turn recycled clothes into something full of memories for your home. Hastings Fish brand launched at Seafood and Wine Festival
The Hastings Fish brand was launched at Hastings Borough Council's Seafood and Wine festival in Hastings. The fish brand gives an opportunity to tell the world how great Hastings fish is! Those present, including representatives from the local fleet and the industry, heard CJ Jackson talk passionately about Hastings, its fleet and the fish landed.
Nick Hales, head chef and owner of Old Custom House spoke of the brand being "a stamp of approval for restaurant customers so they know the fish is sustainable, local, seasonal, and of a high quality." Nick sees the fish brand as a way to "get more people eating fish and being confident about creating their own dishes."
Hastings fish has its own website and social media campaign - they can be found on Facebook and Instagram - detailing the types of catch, and showcasing local restaurants, fishmongers and wholesalers using and selling Hastings fish. The site also offers recipes and tips for using Hastings Fish.
There is also merchandise including window sticker and cool bags - one free for each customer purchasing Hastings fish from local fishmongers (subject to availability) and there are tea towels to purchase from the Tourist Information Centre, with profits going to the Hastings Fishermen Protection Society.
