Hastings Coast Protection Works - Stage II
Welcome to our newsletter to keep you up-to-date with the plans for the construction of two new rock groynes, along the Carlisle Parade frontage, to help keep the beach in place and protect the sea wall.
There will also be some moving of beach back from the harbour arm area and a new set of timber access steps to the beach will be installed.
The contract for the construction work was successfully tendered and won by J.T. Mackley Ltd. Mackley are an experienced coastal civil engineering contractor and are also currently working on the nearby Fairlight Cove Coast Protection scheme.
The project's designers are engineers from Canterbury City Council's Engineering Services, working through the East Kent Engineering Partnership, who have expertise in marine construction and coastal protection. They are also supervising the works on behalf of Hastings Borough Council.
Funding for the project has been provided through the Environment Agency's Flood Defence Grant in Aid (FDGiA) as well as by Hastings Borough Council.
5,000 tonnes of Larvik granite rocks from Norway will be delivered by sea to complete the construction of the rock groynes. It is anticipated that rock deliveries will commence in late September. Once the new rock groynes have been completed 25,000 tonnes of beach will be moved back from the harbour arm area to protect the sea wall. The works will last for approximately 10 weeks, depending on the weather.
Delivery of rock by sea can only take place at high tide, so may take place at any time of the day or night including Sundays, according to the state of the tide.
Construction of the rock groynes and the moving of the beach can only take place at low tide and in order to progress the works quickly we may work early in the morning or in the evening, to maintain the momentum of the project and complete it before the weather deteriorates as we head into autumn.
