New for Hastings and Bexhill - 1066 Cycling Festival
1066 Cycling Festival is a brand new free two day festival celebrating everything cycling. The festival will run over the weekend 11 and 12 June in two venues, Hastings and Bexhill.
Organised by Hastings Borough Council's Active Hastings team with support from Rother District Council the event will showcase some fantastic cycling events, demonstrations and family fun activities.
On Saturday 11 June the festival will open at 2pm at the Stade Open Space in Hastings with a school and family parade. Other events include a pro BMX demo by The Source, stunt displays by the amazing 3SIXTY bicycle stunt team, a chance to look at Electra bikes and find out why they are so special with Handsome Bicycles and even a best decorated bike competition.
Events finish at the Stade Open Space at 6pm but continue in Bottle Alley, Hastings with the Bottle Alley Bike Bomb. Races start at 7pm at Bottle Alley; to participate register for free at the Pier from midday.
Cllr Dawn Poole, the council's lead member for leisure said:
"This is set to be a great new festival that will add to our already vibrant calendar of events. There will be so much to see and do; something for everyone. Come and enjoy the fun and don't forget to bring your decorated bike along and register for the races in the Bottle Alley Bike Bomb!"
The fun continues on Sunday 12 June at the De La Warr Pavilion 11am - 3pm.
Events in Bexhill include free bike maintenance provided by Bexhill Bike Hire, a Coastal Culture Trail ride plus picnic and BMX sessions at Bexhill BMX Track.
Cllr Jonathan Johnson, Rother District Council cabinet member for young people, sport and leisure, said:
"This promises to be a valuable addition to the calendar and will offer lots of fun activities on two wheels which should appeal to people of all ages."
On both days festival visitors will be treated to Rollapaluza where participants can battle it out on bikes over a sprint distance at speeds in excess of 50mph, travel the world during a virtual spin session provided by Freedom Leisure and make free fruit smoothies with a special smoothie bike supplied by Sustrans.
