Compost toilets at our allotments
There are 14 allotment sites across the Borough, the majority of which are managed by Hastings Borough Council. Allotments are a great way for people to access fresh food, share a community experience and get fresh air and exercise.
However there are no permanent toilets on our sites. Needless to say this can often result in discomfort. Why compost toilets?
We have worked with allotment groups to encourage and support them to apply for grant aid towards to costs of installing composting toilets on some sites. This has transformed the allotment experience for many people.
The benefits of composting toilets are that they do not require water and after a time they provide excellent quality compost that can be used on allotments.Having composting toilets is not only more comfortable for allotmenteers, but great for the environment.
Just now there are 4 sites with toilets, and whilst not all sites are big enough to warrant a composting toilet, we aim to encourage all our larger sites to have a composting toilet installed.
