Leader's weekly update -14/05/21
Hi, Kim here, I am pleased to be able to talk to you again. From Monday May 17th our pubs, cafes and restaurants will be fully open, and we will be able to eat and drink inside again and visitors to our town will be able to stay overnight in our hotels and guest houses. This is good news for us as a tourist town.
Restrictions and guidelines remain in place though, and the virus is still with us. Wearing face coverings, washing our hands and social distancing are still essential.
We have some 'pop up' vaccination clinics coming to central locations over the next few weeks to help everyone aged 40+ to get their jab. There's more information on our website and social media channels.
Last week's election saw hundreds of people working hard work to make sure it was as safe as possible. Thanks to everyone involved and to those who voted. Next time it would be great to see an increase in the number of people who vote as the turnout was only around 35%.
Thanks to all the councillors who have left us for their service and welcome to those newly elected ones. It is good to see that nearly half of our Labour councillors are women. Former deputy leader Colin Fitzgerald's support for our town through the last year was invaluable and Cllr Paul Barnett is pleased to be taking on this role.
Next week at the annual council meeting we will elect a new mayor and deputy. It will be a socially distanced event. Meetings will continue to be live streamed on our website and available to watch afterwards. Please visit www.hastings.gov.uk.
This is also where you can report litter and fly tipping (and do much more) and thanks to everyone who does this already and to Tidy Up St Leonards and all the volunteers who are litter picking in our town to help us keep it looking lovely. We really appreciate your work.
We have a lot to do over the coming year as we continue to manage our way through the difficulties caused by the pandemic and help our town to recover. We will keep working with partners on the priorities contained in our corporate plan, which is reviewed regularly, and to deliver the services that people depend on. Together we will build a brighter future.
Thanks for listening and stay safe.
