Social media policy
Our social media accounts are a quick and easy way to find out what's happening locally and receive information updates about council services for residents, businesses and visitors.
We want you to receive a high quality service however you choose to get in touch. We currently have Facebook and Twitter accounts:
We use social media for:
- letting you know about events coming up
- providing information about our services
- notifications about service disruptions.
We do not use social media to:
- engage in personal conversations
- debate issues about complaints
- debate our decisions and policies.
Our commitment to you:
- we will be friendly, polite and honest
- we will always keep your personal data private - please ensure that you do not disclose information of a confidential nature when you post a message on our public page
- direct you to the appropriate place to report your issue or receive a response
- we will protect your privacy
- we will monitor our social media accounts and keep a record of all posts to and from our accounts.
Other ways to contact us
If you need to contact us about something serious, urgent, or that involves your personal details, social media is not the best mechanism. Please use our contact form, or telephone or email our Community Contact Centre instead.
Many of our services are now available online and by reporting issues via My Hastings issues are usually sorted out quicker as your query gets sent directly to those who can respond. For an up to date list of what you can do online please visit My Hastings.
If you are unhappy with the service you have received from us, or wish to compliment our staff, you can do so using our online comments and complaints form.
What if we get something wrong?
If we make a mistake that results in incorrect information about a person, business or any other organisation being published by us or the media we will endeavour to correct or retract and remove this information at the earliest possible opportunity.
We cannot be held responsible for incorrect information being published that we don't know about or if a third party does not respond and act in a timely manner to remove the incorrect information when requested to do so.
Liking and following
Please don't be offended if we don't 'like' or 'follow' you on social media. We usually only follow or like people who provide information that is pertinent to our work as a local authority (for example central government accounts, local media, and our partners) or those whose information we can pass on for the benefit of many local people.
There will also be times we'll need to like or follow an account in order to take part in conversations.
If we like or follow someone, retweet or share their information, it doesn't mean that we endorse them.
Sharing and retweeting
If we share information, we are not necessarily endorsing it.
We try and share or retweet information that we think will be of interest or of use to you, however please don't be offended if we don't retweet or share something you want us to.
We reserve the right to keep a record of and remove any contributions that don't meet any of our guidelines. To use our accounts please ensure you:
- are civil and polite
- don't post messages that are unlawful, libellous, harassing, defamatory, offensive, abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, sexually oriented or racially offensive
- aren't abusive about council employees or councillors
- don't swear
- don't post content copied from elsewhere for which you do not own the copyright
- are cautious about what you retweet: if you share or retweet a tweet with a photo that someone else used without the photographer's permission, you may be liable to prosecution, just as the original tweeter is liable
- don't post the same message, or very similar messages, more than once (also called 'spamming')
- don't publicise your, or anyone else's, personal information, e.g. contact details
- don't advertise products or services
- don't impersonate someone else.
We will block your account if you contravene these rules.
We reserve the right to request that abusive material about any council employee be removed from any other social media accounts should it be brought to our attention. This includes personal, business and closed group accounts.
Pre-election period 'Purdah'
In the six-week run up to an election, we will continue to publish important service announcements using social media. However during this time, councils have to be especially careful not to say anything that could be seen to support any political party or candidate.
So, although we might post less, that doesn't mean we're not doing anything. Our work will continue through the pre-election period. We just won't be talking about it much in the run-up to the election. This is in line with the law and central government election guidance.
