I want to apply for a zoo licence
A licence is required to operate premises as a zoo. Strict conditions apply to zoo licences and they are subject to inspection by both council officers and DEFRA zoo inspectors.
To apply for a zoo licence you will need to complete both of the forms below:
- Notice of intention to apply form
- Zoo licence application form
- Zoo licence renewal form
- Zoo licence transfer form
Once you have completed the forms you will need to send them to us. You can do this by scanning them and emailing them to us. Or you can post them to us at:
Hastings Borough Council
Muriel Matters House
Before your licence can be granted, we will need to inspect your premises. This inspection will be carried out by council officers and a vet and a DEFRA zoo inspector. The purpose of these inspections is to outline welfare and accommodation conditions for the licence. These conditions are for the protection of the animals. Considerable costs can be occurred in these inspections and the applicants are liable for those charges as well as the licence fee.
Once approved your licence will run for four years and will be need to be renewed every 6 years after that.
We will normally complete the application process within 20 working days. This may take longer if the vet inspection is delayed or raises other matters to be completed.
The charge for this service can be found on our licensing fees page.
As noted above you may also be liable for additional costs from the inspections.
Licenses are issued initially for 4 years and then renewable every 6 years thereafter.
We will send you out a renewal form prior to the expiry of your licence. Or else you can download the form below:
You will need to complete the form and send it back to us. Once we receive it we will check it and then approve it if there are no issues.
Your premises will not be inspected at the time of renewal but an inspection will be conducted annually at some point throughout the year. These annual inspections will be conducted by one of our officers and a vet. At the half way point of the 6 year renewal period a full inspection will be arranged with a DEFRA zoo inspector.
If you want to transfer your pet shop licence you will need to complete the form below:
