  • The King's Coronation

On Saturday 6 May, King Charles will be crowned in the official Coronation at Westminster Abbey. There will then be an additional Bank Holiday on Monday 8 May.

The official website has lots of information about the history of coronations and the events planned for the weekend. This includes community events and volunteering opportunities. If you are planning to host an event like a street party, you can add it to the website. There is also a toolkit to help you celebrate at home.

As part of the Coronation weekend, there will also be several Coronation Big Lunches across the country.

More information on the volunteering opportunities will be available from 20 March on The Big Help Out website.

    Street parties

Residents may wish to hold a street party with their neighbours. The Government have updated street parties guidance on how to organise a street party.

    Street party road closure

The deadline for applying for a road closure for a street party is Friday 24 March 2023. Please apply online. Once your application has been received we will work with you on the other information we need about your event.

    Risk assessment

A risk assessment is careful check of what is likely to cause harm to people at an event. Doing this means you can weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions. Or, if you need to include more measures to ensure risks to people's safety are minimised at your street party.

To ensure the event is run safely we do recommend that you carry out a basic risk assessment and you can use this basic risk assessment template to help you. This will ensure that you and the other organisers have thought about things that might cause harm at your street party.

    Temporary event notice

If you are planning to sell alcohol at a street party you will need to apply for a temporary events notice a minimum of ten working days before the date of the event.

    Other coronation events

If you wish to hold any larger or public events for the coronation please see the information and guidance for this on our events planning section.
