Russell Smith (Orbit)
I have started my career in community development with a local trust working on a project that was later awarded ‘Best UK Practice Project’. As a result of the recognition that this project achieved, our team showcased the project at the World Expo 2000 in Hannover. Since my work with the local trust, I have continued to develop my role, coordinating activities for local Credit Unions, Housing Associations, BME groups and Youth Groups and County Council. I have managed a diverse portfolio of projects ranging from a Community Caf’ to a Climbing Wall and has organised numerous events.
I am a strong advocate of voluntary work, and previous voluntary roles include director of a Credit Union and working on steering groups for local charities as well as working with community members to establish charities. I have completed a foundation degree in Community Development, studying community engagement methodologies for my final thesis ‘Overcoming barriers into participation in comparison from local to the global’.
My specialities lie in partnership working creating mutually beneficial strong partnerships to aid in the development of projects and funding applications. To date I have been involved in the development of over 200 projects ranging from short term projects to 3 year lottery funded projects in health, youth, employment & skills and families. My 18 year background in creating strong and successful community projects has given me invaluable knowledge in projects that are likely to succeed. Combined with a Prince2 qualification in project management, to develop projects that have a strong ethos on best practice.
My current role of Income and Development Consultant with Orbit supports the operational delivery of our Community Investment Plan with a particular responsibility for income and development targets. This work includes partnerships and funding initiatives covering, selling services, joint commissioning and bids as well as business development as income grows. I Work across the Community Investment team, providing support on ‘what works’ across programmes, research and best practice from partners and sectors. This includes analysis on effectiveness of tenancy sustainment with Orbit and supporting wider sector successes with this focus.
