The first step is to consider what the success conditions for your festival look and feel like.
You may find it useful to reflect back to the original inspiration for the event – to identify the beginning of the event’s narrative.
Some starting points might be:
- Founding documentation – post-it notes, online posts, journals, emails.
- Event programming and planning meetings.
- Funding bids and sponsorship proposals.
- Permission applications.
- Marketing & PR information.
- Evaluation from previous years.
You may want to consider the following questions:
- What is the event’s vision and values?
- What is your curatorial approach?
- What are the event’s aims and objectives?
- What are the event’s project outcomes?
- Who is involved and how do you want them to be affected by the event?
- Who else might need to know about the impact – funders, partners?
Begin to divide these broader objectives into their constituent parts highlighting the ‘what’ and the ‘who’.
- Quantitative: Hard Data – what can be defined - (aims/ facts/ outputs)
- Qualitative: Rich Data – what can be described - (objectives/ descriptive/ outcomes)
- Internal Perspective – people directly involved in the event.
- External perspective – people who experience the event, and wider groups that may be impacted.
