Tressell Training - Inspiring Young People

Our acclaimed specialist unit has been providing training and support for young people from Hastings and the surrounding areas since the early 1990s.

We mainly deliver tailored programmes to 14-19 year olds who are either having problems at school and may not complete their statutory education or who need additional support to get into employment, education or training.  We also provide one-to-one support for people of all ages who face additional barriers to joining the workforce.

We aim to keep improving and updating our service and this was reflected by a 'Grade 2' rating in our 2007 Inspection Report (.pdf 57KB).

Entry to Employment (e2e)

Entry to Employment is a government funded Learning and Skills Council training programme mainly for 16 to 19 year olds who may have left school with few or no qualifications and need some extra help getting ready for employment or further education.

Most students are able to access the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) payment and all students are able to claim their travel costs to and from the centre or work placement.

In-centre training sessions involve small friendly groups.  Programmes are developed for students according to their individual needs and range from Basic/Key Skills and Motivational Training to work experience which supports vocational training such as NVQs.

Joining Entry to Employment

Any organisation that works with young people can refer someone onto the e2e programme.  However, an appointment must be made with a Personal Advisor (PA) from Sussex Connexions Careers to fill in a referral form (we can also help with this) and agree a suitable start date.

We take on new groups every month so young people do not usually have to wait very long before they can start.

Projects for young people aged 14+

We run a number of different projects working mainly with under 16s still attending school.  We recognise that everyone has different styles of learning and different interests and that the 'traditional' school timetable doesn't suit all students.  That's why we offer an alternative approach which helps make learning more fun, interesting and rewarding.

Our students get a range of new skills and experiences, working in small groups both in and out of school.  Our projects motivate, boost confidence and develop team and life skills and help make sure that students leave school with somewhere to go - college, further training or a job.

Young people can be referred to any of the following projects through their school's Head of Year or Personal Advisor:

INSPIRE

Our INSPIRE project provides one-to-one support for 16-19 year olds living, or going to school in Rural Rother who are at risk of becoming, or who already are, NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training), to develop the skills needed to enter employment.

Funding for this project comes from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and the Department for the Environment, Fisheries and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) via The Leader+ Fund from the Wealden and Rural Rother Partnership (WARR).

Motorvation

Our exciting motor vehicle project encourages 14-19 year olds into learning and training, using their interest in cars and bikes as an incentive.  As with all our projects Motorvation is designed to boost confidence, self-esteem, and improve employability.

Routeways Multiskills+

We provide Multiskills+ as part of the Routeways programme offered across Hastings and Rother.  This programme specifically helps vulnerable young people identified by their schools as being able to benefit from a more vocational approach to learning; the students are working towards the achievement of a BTEC Introductory Diploma in Vocational Studies.

We also offer the intensive support programme called TIME Out which helps students who are struggling on various Routeways programmes to continue with vocational learning.

T.A.P.

This stands for 'Tressell Alternative Provision' and is designed to help students complete school successfully.  Pupils from Years 9, 10 and 11 are selected by the schools if they are identified at being at risk of non-completion of statutory education and join the TAP project until they complete their learning at school.  The fun weekly sessions might include the Community Sports Leader Award, local conservation projects, fishing coach award, first aid training, DJ, drama, and music workshops plus a whole range of out of school vocational tasters.

Projects for people of all ages

We're always expanding our services to meet the needs of local people.  As a result of successful funding bids we are now delivering the STEADIH and Getting Hastings to Work projects which are designed to improve the life opportunities of people of all ages who are NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training).

STEADIH

This Tressell project is specially designed to help people with housing problems by giving them a stepping stone into jobs and training.  Supporting Training, Education and Development for the Insecurely Housed or STEADIH, targets anyone of working age who is finding it hard getting employment because of their housing situation.

Funding for this project comes from the European Social Fund via the Learning and Skills Council. Tressell Training is working with housing association Amicus Horizon Group, HBC Housing Department, local colleges and training providers for this project, up to 2008.

STEADIH provides constant individual support, encouragement and recognition in the form of 1-to-1 sessions to learn about particular needs, ideas and feelings.

People on the project are gradually introduced to small groups of people in a similar situation and given encouragement and support until they're comfortable and confident enough to move onto the next step.

Participants are then helped to choose a set of assessments that will move them closer to the kind of work they're interested in.

There couldn't be a simpler way of gaining highly achievable qualifications and easing the way into work.

Getting Hastings to Work

Getting Hastings to Work (GHTW) is an innovative scheme funded by the Local Economic Growth Initiative (LEGI).  This project is designed to help local people overcome barriers to joining the workforce.  Through GHTW we provide valuable travel assistance which enables local people to take-up new education, employment or training opportunities.
