There are a number of freshwater fishing locations within the Borough of Hastings where members of the public can fish. It is however necessary to have a rod licence from the Environment Agency purchased from the Post Office and either a day ticket or membership of one of the two clubs in the area. Two local Angling Clubs manage many waters both inside and outside the Borough. Contact details are shown below.
Alexandra Park in the centre of Hastings has two excellent well-stocked reservoirs, Harmers & Buckshole. These two waters are being used by the Fishing4U project in order to get young people interested in the environment and appreciate their surroundings. It is hoped to reduced crime and vandalism, reduced drug and substance abuse & reduce alcohol and tobacco use. To this end it is hoped that the youth of Hastings will get involved in sport and other useful activities and establish purpose and enjoyment.
The Fishing4U project is run alongside Sports4U which already provides free sport activities. Peter Phillips is employed by Hastings Borough Council to introduce young people to fishing. Many young people have already benefited from these sessions. No equipment is required and there are no costs involved. Initially young people can come along to any of the Sports4U sessions and register to go fishing. Information can also be obtained from the Hotline 01424 781122.
Future taster sessions will continue to be run for absolute beginners during the school holidays with registration usually on the Monday and fishing Tuesday to Friday. It is however very important to dovetail with other anglers already fishing at both locations so numbers are limited on each session.
The scheme is aimed at 10 – 16 year olds and runs throughout the year at various times to suit school attendance. When time permits courses will also be run on Saturday mornings, more so in the winter months when daylight hours are shorter. Intensive courses and competitions will also be staged for those more experienced anglers
It is anticipated that some young people will undergo coaching courses run by the Angling Association resulting in a recognised qualification. Some of these youth can then be employed as coaches.
