Using Search

Using search is as simple as entering your query in the search field, and clicking on the 'Search' button. The search results page will then show you a list of links to pages which satisfy your query.  You can then either follow any of those links to see the page in question, or refine your search.

The examples below show how your query can use keywords and operators in order to get the best results from the search facility.

The search facility is not case sensitive.

Keyword searching

Enter a single keyword to find all pages containing that word.
Example: A search using the query 'planning' will find all pages containing the word 'planning'.

Using the 'and' operator

Enter two or more keywords separated by the operator 'and' to find all pages which contain all those query words.
Example: A search using the query 'town and planning' will find all pages containing both the words 'town' and 'planning' (but not necessarily next to each other as in the phrase 'town planning').

Using the 'and not' operator

Enter two or more keywords separated by the operator 'and not' to find all pages which containg the first query word and do not contain the other query words.
Example: A search using the query 'town and not planning' will find all pages containing the word 'town' which do not contain the word 'planning'.

Using the 'near' operator

Enter two or more keywords separated by the operator 'near' to find all pages where those query words occur near to each other.
Example: A search using the query 'town near planning' will find all pages containing the word 'town' when it occurs near the word 'planning'.

Using the 'or' operator

Enter two or more keywords separated by the operator 'or' to find all pages containing either of those keywords.
Example: A search using the query 'town or planning' will find all pages containing the word "town" or the word 'planning'.

Mixing operators

You can mix the operators 'and', 'and not', 'near' and 'or'.
Example: A search using the query 'town and country and not planning' will find all pages containing the words 'town' and 'country', but which do not contain the word 'planning'.

Phrase searching

Enter a phrase of more than one keyword between double quotes to find all pages containing that phrase.
Example: A search using the query "town planning" will find all pages containing the phrase 'town planning'.

Note that the use of double quotes overrides the 'and', 'and not', 'near' and 'or' operators.
Example: A search using the query "town and country" will find all pages containing the phrase 'town and country'.

Wildcard searching

Use the wildcard character '*' after a prefix to find pages containing all words beginning with that prefix.

Example: A search using the query 'plan*' will find all pages containing words with the prefix 'plan' such as ' plan', 'planned' and 'planning'.
