Where we're spending money and why

Students Launched in April 2009, our new two year programme of grants will finance a raft of projects that focus on:

  • getting people back into work
  • giving them the skills to get good jobs
  • helping young people who are not in full time education or training
  • giving training opportunities to everybody who wants them

For more information about the Government's Area Based Grants (the funding source behind all the projects we're planning) visit www.communities.gov.uk or visit our 'Projects We're Funding' area.

How we'll make sure regeneration benefits everybody

A view of the town Social Exclusion is a shorthand term for what can happen when people or small areas suffer from a combination of linked problems like unemployment, poor skills, low incomes, poor housing, high crime environments, bad health and troubled family backgrounds which prevents them from:

  • Taking part in economic, social, political and cultural life
  • Being a part of mainstream society
  • Using local services
  • Using local resources like parks and gardens

Social Inclusion is all about helping everyone, regardless of their experiences and circumstances, achieve their potential in life.  It's about overcoming inequality and building stronger communities by:

  • Targeting specific individuals, groups or neighbourhoods affected by economic, social or environmental deprivation
  • Dealing with the causes of deprivation rather than its symptoms
  • Looking at the 'bigger picture' when it comes to tackling deprivation
  • Working in partnership with local people

Learn more about what we're doing to make sure everybody, from every corner of the town, benefits from regeneration in our draft plan.

Watch the Broomgrove Chimneys come down

As many residents will no doubt remember, the process of taking down the Broomgrove Power Station chimneys was a painstaking one!  As plans for the redevelopment of the site begin to take shape, we'd thought many of you might enjoy a look back at the chimneys as they once were...
