The Twin Bin stand at Sainsbury's
Landfill sites like our own Pebsham will run out in less than 10 years.
We have to throw less away and recycle more and we have to do it now.
In Autumn 2007, we gave over 20,000 properties twin, 240 litre wheeled bins - one green bin for recyclables (Twin Bin Frequently Asked Questions - What Goes in the Bins?) and one grey bin for everything else.
From 1 October 2007, we started collecting each bin fortnightly, the green bin one week, the grey bin the next week. As a result, we significantly increased the level of recycling from 18% to 28% putting us well on the way to meeting our 2010 target. Most importantly, we've reduced the amount of rubbish going to landfill. In 2008 we added a further 1,500 properties to the scheme which is now helping us reach record recycling levels.
A new Garden Waste Club has now been launched and nearly 1,500 residents are having a 240 litre brown wheeled bin collected fortnightly for an annual fee of just £35.
