Share a Sussex Breakfast

Restaurateurs, hotels, bed and breakfasts and attractions owners have been invited to tuck into a Sussex Breakfast.

The Sussex Breakfast Skill Sharing event takes place at Battle Golf Club on 2 July and will highlight the benefits of using local produce, including all the ingredients found in a hearty cooked breakfast.

Owners will have the chance to make contacts with suppliers of everything from eggs, bacon and beef to Sussex produced halloumi and ham.

They will find out why using seasonal, locally produced food and drink benefits customers, businesses and the local economy.  Sussex breakfasts help keep farmers in business and help safeguard the local landscape and wildlife.

The event is organised by 1066 Country Marketing and Plumpton College.

Beat the Birds

Help beat the birds and keep Hastings clean and tidy.

With summer here household rubbish left out on the street begins to be very attractive to pests, particularly seagulls.

Following the success of last year's Don't Feed the Birds campaign, Hastings Borough Council is calling on residents to keep bags in bins or, if that's not possible, to put them out on the morning of their collection day.

Councillor Roy Tucker, lead member for the environment, said:

"While the introduction of Twin Bins has helped reduce the problem there are still lots of seagulls around, and they are a menace when it comes to rubbish bags left out on the street."
"We are asking all residents, wherever possible, to leave rubbish bags in their dustbins rather than on the road or pavement.  I appreciate this isn't possible for everyone, so where you haven't got a dustbin we ask that rubbish be put out before 7am and not left out overnight.  I realise this is early, but seagulls are such a part of Hastings that we just have to do what we can to keep our streets as clean as possible."
"We do appreciate that the problem is worse in areas that are not part of the Twin Bin scheme and we are currently investigating alternatives for those properties and will publish full details soon."

Special art exhibition takes pride of place in Hastings

An extraordinary display of Japanese prints is going on display for the first time in a decade.

The large-scale exhibition at the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery features a collection of stunning 19th century 'actor' prints from the collection of Lord and Lady Brassey.

These unique wood block prints have strong connections with the flamboyant Japanese theatrical tradition of 'kabuki'.

Many of the prints feature characters with elaborate costumes and exaggerated make-up for dramatic effect.

The majority of themes represent historic stories and events or comic portrayals of everyday life, from artists including Kunisada, Kuniyoshi, Yoshitsuya and Sadahide.

A full colour catalogue will accompany the exhibition and is on sale at the museum, in John's Place.

The prints are on display until 5 October.  For more information visit: www.hmag.org.uk
