Hastings topped the league of ten South East coastal destinations that people have visited, or would consider visiting, according to research that has just been published.
The independent research, carried out by Tourism South East and Arkenford, a market research company, looked at day trips made by visitors to the South east. Of the 5300 respondents, over 700 were asked about various coastal destinations, from whether they had heard of it, to whether they would consider visiting it, or had visited it.
A wide range of places were listed, including Folkestone, Margate, Whitstable, Bognor, Eastbourne and, of course, Hastings.
The research showed that more people had visited Hastings, over 20% of those interviewed, than any other town. And of those who hadn't visited, more people (almost 30%) said they would consider a visit here.
Kevin Boorman, Head of Destination Management & Marketing for Hastings Borough Council, was very excited about the results. He said: "This is a tremendous result for Hastings, and shows just how our image is changing. More people had visited Hastings than any of the other seaside towns listed, and more people would consider visiting Hastings than any other destination."
"The visitor economy is vital for Hastings, supporting thousands of jobs and generating around £150m for the town. The fact that people rate Hastings as a ‘must visit’ destination is testament to the efforts of all of those involved, from the shops and restaurants to the attractions and, of course, the many events we have. Indeed, I expect the town to be full this weekend with the 25th Jack In the Green festival, one of the most popular events in the town's calendar."
